Sophie asked the following question:

On Masterchef in the lesson, they were making icecream. I’d like to make it, except that in the place I live, no one sells ice cream machines. Please don’t advise shops, I want to make some tonight to surprise my daughter (it’s her 11th b-day). Thanks in advance

Well, I want to be 50 lbs lighter tonight too, but it’s not going to happen.

In my culinary class in Frsno we made ice cream (super soft serve) in a plastic bag. I believe it was doulel wrapped. The mixture was on the inside. The ice on the outer half. and then
“shake shake shake Senora shake your bodyline
Shake shake shake Senora, shake it all the time
    SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE SENORA”

    Here ya go…enjoy!!

Deary me. It CAN be done by hand, but it’s very very labor intensive and the finished product must be eaten right away. Even without a machine, you must use a mechanized handcranking “freezer” device with rock salt/ice mixture on the outside to freeze the contents. Don’t try to surprise her… have her ASSIST you with the making. She’ll never forget it.

You can make by hand what’s called Coffee Can ice cream. Put the ingredients in a small can, tape it shut securely, put it in the larger can with ice and salt filling the space. Then shake the dickens out of it ;-)

Here are several links to old fashioned ways to making ice cream. Just don’t use the recipes that call for eggs (custard style) as they have to be cooked in advance. My all-time favourite recipe for a blazing hot summer day treat is PEACH ice cream… made with peaches right off the trees in grand dad’s orchard! Took hours to make, and less than 5 minutes to eat ;-)
